Ice hockey glass is a key safety component of the "tempered glass" that form the primary protective barrier around the rink. Modern ice hockey dasher boards use a composite structure: the lower part consists of white impact-resistant boards (PE boards), yellow kick plates, and blue handrails, while the upper part is fitted with high-strength transparent glass barriers. This forms a three-dimensional protection system that ensures player safety and provides spectators with unobstructed viewing. The upper glass barrier is made of tempered glass, with glass posts evenly embedded into the top of the dasher boards to ensure flexibility and tightness of the protective glass throughout the rink.

Main Dimensions
| Product Feature | Shandong Yaohua Advantage |
| Tempered glass | 5 million m²/year, covering multiple thicknesses from 3–19 mm |
| Laminated glass | 1.5 million m²/year, using PVB and SGP interlayers |
| Curved / bent tempered glass | Capability for hot bending and bent tempered glass |
| International standards | Meets US SGCC, EU CE, and other international certifications |
| Export experience | Specializes in supplying ice hockey arena glass for the North American market |
The dimensions of ice hockey glass vary depending on the location and competition level. Key parameters are as follows:
1. Total Dasher Board Height
| Location | Glass Height | Notes |
| Behind goals (end dasher boards) | 1.6–2.4 m | IIHF championship standard is 1.6 m; higher-level events may reach 2.4 m |
| Side dasher boards (side protection) | 0.8–1.8 m | Side glass height is typically 0.8 m or 1.8 m |
| IIHF championship requirement: End dasher boards behind the goal line shall be fitted with 1.6 m high protective glass, and side dasher boards shall be fitted with 0.8 m high protective glass, with protective netting above the glass. | ||

Glass Thickness & Dimensions
- Glass thickness: typically 12–15 mm
- Spacing of glass posts: evenly distributed to ensure uniform flexibility and tightness
- Curved tempered glass: used at corner sections of goal areas, with 12 mm or 15 mm thickness
Product Configuration
1. Glass Type
The primary glass used for ice hockey dasher boards is curved tempered glass (also known as physically tempered or prestressed glass), made by heating float glass to approximately 620–650°C and then rapidly cooling it. This is a type of safety glass. Tempered glass is widely used for curved glass curtain walls, indoor curved partitions, glass railings, and barriers.
2. Supporting Structure
- White dasher board: typically 2 m in length (approx. 3.04 m at bends), standard height 1.2 m, thickness 8–15 mm
- Yellow kick plate: 0.2 m height, thickness 10–15 mm
- Blue handrail: thickness approx. 15 mm
- Aluminum alloy or galvanized steel frames
3. Connections
Guardrails are connected using bolts no smaller than M16. Door gaps are strictly controlled within 5 mm. All rink doors open outward.
Key Functions
1. High Impact Resistance
Tempered glass of the same thickness has 3–5 times the impact resistance and 3–5 times the bending strength of ordinary glass. It can withstand high-speed puck impacts and intense player collisions without breaking. International standards require glass impact resistance to meet EN 356 P5A grade.
2. Safety Performance
When tempered glass is broken by external force, it shatters into small, blunt, honeycomb‑like particles that are less likely to cause injury. The increased load‑bearing capacity of tempered glass reduces the risk of injury significantly.
3. Excellent Thermal Stability
Tempered glass has good thermal stability, withstanding temperature differences three times greater than ordinary glass and coping with temperature changes of over 200°C. This effectively prevents thermal breakage. This property is critical for adapting to the temperature difference between the low ice temperature (‑6°C to ‑7°C) and the ambient arena temperature.
4. High Transparency for Viewing
The glass barrier remains highly transparent, without obstructing spectator sightlines, while providing good visibility for referees and players.
5. Complete Protection System
The resilient frame structure absorbs over 85% of impact energy. The colour differentiation between kick plates and the lower boards enhances players’ spatial awareness. Protective netting extending to the front of the stands forms a three‑dimensional safety system.
