Product Details

Balcony glass is a structural safety glazing product designed for balustrades, railings, and balcony enclosures in residential, commercial, and hospitality buildings. It provides a transparent safety barrier while improving the appearance and openness of a building facade.

Tempered glass is produced by heating glass to approximately 700°C and then rapidly cooling it. This creates high surface compression and makes the glass significantly stronger than ordinary annealed glass. When tempered glass breaks, it breaks into small, blunt fragments instead of sharp shards.

Laminated glass consists of two or more glass panes bonded with a PVB or SGP interlayer. When laminated glass breaks, the interlayer holds the fragments together, preventing the panel from falling out. This is important for balconies, especially in high-rise buildings.

Laminated tempered glass is the most recommended specification for balcony balustrades. It combines the strength of tempered glass with the post-breakage retention of laminated glass. Many building codes require laminated glass for guard and balustrade applications.

SGP interlayer offers higher strength, stiffness, and impact resistance than standard PVB. It is preferred for high-rise balconies, skyscrapers, and high-security projects. PVB is suitable for standard residential and commercial balcony glass.

Thicker glass provides better resistance to deflection and load. Coastal areas and high-rise buildings usually require thicker glass because of higher wind loads.

How to Choose Balcony Glass

Glass Type

For most balcony balustrades, laminated tempered glass is the preferred choice. It offers high strength and keeps the glass in place after breakage. Heat-strengthened laminated glass is also widely accepted because it maintains load capacity after breakage.

Glass Thickness

For sheltered residential balconies with framed systems, 10mm tempered glass is often used. For standard residential balconies, 12mm tempered glass is common. For mid-rise buildings and high-traffic areas, 15mm to 17.5mm laminated glass is recommended. For fully frameless high-rise balconies, 19mm tempered glass or 17.52mm laminated glass is often required. Corner balconies and high-rise projects usually benefit from 17.52mm laminated glass.

Safety Certification

Check that the glass carries the relevant safety certifications. CE marking is important for the European market. SGCC is used for the United States. IGCC is used for North America. KS is used for Korea. Australian Standard certification is used for Australia. A reliable supplier should provide test reports with each order.

Environmental Conditions

Coastal areas require thicker laminated glass and SGP interlayer to resist wind-borne debris and salt spray. High-wind zones require increased thickness and may require heat-soak testing to reduce spontaneous breakage risk. Noise-sensitive locations benefit from laminated glass because it provides additional acoustic insulation.

FAQ

Q: What is the best glass type for balcony railings?

A: Laminated tempered glass is the best choice for balcony railings. It combines the strength of tempered glass with the safety retention of laminated glass. Many building codes require laminated glass for guard applications.

Q: What thickness should I choose for balcony glass?

A: For sheltered residential balconies with framed systems, 10mm to 12mm tempered glass is often suitable. For mid-rise buildings and high-traffic areas, 15mm to 17.5mm laminated glass is recommended. For fully frameless high-rise installations, 19mm tempered glass or 17.52mm laminated glass is often required. The final choice depends on building height, wind exposure, and mounting system.

Q: What is the difference between PVB and SGP interlayers?

A: PVB is the standard interlayer for most residential and commercial laminated glass. SGP offers higher strength, stiffness, and impact resistance. SGP is preferred for high-rise balconies, glass floors, and security applications. SGP also maintains structural performance over a wider temperature range.

Q: Is tempered glass alone sufficient for a balcony?

A: Tempered glass alone is not recommended for balcony guards in most jurisdictions. Tempered glass is strong, but it loses structural integrity when it breaks. Laminated glass, preferably laminated tempered glass, keeps the glass in place after breakage and helps prevent falls.

Q: What certifications should I look for?

A: For international projects, look for CE marking, SGCC for the United States, IGCC for North America, KS for Korea, and Australian Standard certification for Australia. Yaohua Glass holds these certifications and provides test documentation with orders.

Q: Can you customize glass size, color, or edge finish?

A: Yes. Yaohua Glass offers custom panel sizes up to 6000mm × 3210mm, colors including clear, tinted, frosted, and Low-E coated, silkscreen patterns, and edge finishes such as polished flat, beveled, and drilled holes for point-fixed systems.

Q: How is balcony glass packaged for export?

A: Export shipments use ISPM-15 certified wooden crates with shock-absorbing foam padding and edge protection. Glass is transported vertically in A-frame or end-cap crates to prevent breakage during ocean freight. Each crate is custom-built to the panel dimensions. Standard 40HQ containers are used for efficient loading.

Q: What is the typical lead time for export orders?

A: Standard lead time is 15 to 30 days depending on order quantity and customization requirements. Yaohua Glass maintains regular export schedules with shipments departing from Qingdao Port.

Q: Do you provide installation services?

A: No. Shandong Yaohua Glass is a manufacturer and exporter only. We do not provide installation services. We supply glass products from China to customers worldwide.

Q: What is the minimum order quantity?

A: Minimum order quantity varies by product type and specification. Please contact our export team with your project requirements for a customized quotation.

Q: Can you provide samples before a bulk order?

A: Yes. Glass samples can be provided for evaluation. Please contact us for sample availability and shipping arrangements.
