Acoustic glass, also known as acoustic laminated glass, is a high‑performance glazing solution specifically engineered to reduce external noise intrusion. It consists of two or more glass panes bonded together with a specially formulated sound‑dampening polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer. Unlike standard PVB, the acoustic‑grade interlayer contains advanced vibration‑absorbing compounds that effectively dissipate sound energy, thereby lowering airborne noise transmission. This construction retains all the safety and security benefits of conventional laminated glass – including impact resistance, shatter retention, and ultraviolet protection – while delivering superior acoustic insulation. Acoustic glass can be used as a standalone laminated unit or incorporated into insulating glass units (IGUs) to achieve even greater noise reduction combined with thermal efficiency.
| Parameter | Typical Value / Range |
|---|---|
| Weighted Sound Reduction Index (Rw) | 40 – 54 dB (depending on configuration) |
| Sound Transmission Class (STC) | 35 – 45+ dB |
| Outside‑Inside Transmission Class (OITC) | 34 – 35 dB for typical units |
| Rw of standard PVB laminated glass (reference) | ~33 dB |
| Rw of acoustic PVB laminated glass | 38 – 42 dB |
| Rw of acoustic laminated glass in double glazing | Up to 52 dB |
| Rw of acoustic laminated glass in triple glazing | Up to 54 dB |
| Ultraviolet (UV) radiation blocking | Up to 99% |
| Visible light transmittance (clear glass) | Up to 90% |
| Solar control capability | Available with low‑emissivity coatings |
| Safety performance | PVB interlayer holds broken fragments, preventing dangerous shattering |
APPLICATIONS
Acoustic glass is suitable for a wide variety of residential, commercial, and specialised settings where noise control is essential.
In residential buildings, it is ideal for windows facing busy roads, highways, railways, or airports, as well as for bedrooms in noisy urban districts, sunrooms, and skylights. For commercial and public buildings, acoustic glass is widely used in office facades, curtain walls, hotels, hospitals, schools, conference centres, and recording studios to ensure occupant comfort and privacy. Specialised uses include soundproof barriers for rail transit, theatres, concert halls, government buildings, and healthcare facilities where confidentiality and tranquillity are paramount.
SELECTION GUIDELINES
Choosing the right acoustic glass involves several practical considerations.
First, identify the primary noise source. Low‑frequency traffic rumble (engine noise, highway sounds) responds best to acoustic PVB laminated glass with strong damping properties, while high‑frequency sounds such as human speech or office equipment are more effectively managed by insulating glass units with adequate air cavities. Mixed urban noise often calls for a combination of acoustic lamination and IGU construction.
Next, match the required STC or Rw rating to your privacy needs. An STC of 30‑34 offers minimal privacy with normal speech audible; STC 36 or above makes speech unintelligible; STC 38‑40 provides high‑performance control suitable for corporate or healthcare spaces; and STC 45 or higher delivers maximum privacy for demanding environments.
Also consider the overall glass thickness, as thicker panes generally increase sound transmission loss, and wider air gaps or argon gas filling in IGUs further reduce sound conductivity. Finally, remember that acoustic performance depends not only on the glass itself but also on the window frame, edge seals, and installation quality – the entire system must be evaluated as a whole to achieve the desired outcome.
