Product Details

Stepped insulating glass, also known as stepped IG units or stepped double glazing, is a specialised type of insulated glass unit in which two or more glass panes are intentionally offset from one another, creating a stepped or staggered profile. In contrast to conventional insulating glass units where all panes are perfectly aligned, stepped IGUs have one pane that is larger than the other, extending beyond the edges to form a ledge or step.

This stepped configuration serves both aesthetic and functional purposes. The larger outer pane can completely conceal the underlying frame structure, mounting hardware and spacer systems, creating a seamless, monolithic glass appearance that is highly sought after in contemporary architecture. The step height can be customised from just a few millimetres to tens of centimetres, and can even reach up to 1000 mm for specialised applications.

Key Applications

Stepped insulating glass is widely used in architectural and specialty applications where both aesthetics and high performance are essential.

In glass facades and curtain walls, the larger outer pane conceals frames and support structures, creating a continuous and flush exterior glass surface. Stepped units also allow seamless connections at building corners. In cold storage display doors, the stepped outer pane covers the mounting frame, giving refrigerated retail displays a cleaner and more attractive appearance. For rooflight windows and skylights, stepped glazing variants are available for opening elements in glass roofs, offering passive house certified thermal performance. Walkable glass flooring benefits from step designs that enable proper load transfer. In high- end residential and commercial windows, stepped IGUs are used in operable window applications where different pane sizes are required.

Advantages & Benefits

Seamless aesthetic appeal – The stepped design allows the larger outer pane to fully conceal frames, spacers and hardware, delivering a clean and monolithic glass look that is highly prized in modern architecture.

Superior thermal insulation – The multi-pane construction with gas filled cavities and Low-E coatings provides excellent thermal insulation, reducing energy consumption and maintaining indoor comfort throughout the year. Passivehousecertified configurations achieve Uw values as low as 1.0 W/(m²K).

Enhanced structural integrity – The stepped configuration improves the glass unit’s resistance to diagonal and torsional forces, which is particularly important for operable windows and large format facade elements.

Sound insulation – The multi-layer construction with air or gas filled cavities offers effective acoustic insulation, with airborne sound insulation ratings (Rw) up to 43 dB.

Design flexibility – Step heights can be customised from millimetres to metres, and complex shapes or curved configurations are also available, accommodating virtually any architectural requirement.

UV protection – Low-E coatings and laminated interlayers can significantly reduce UV transmission, protecting interior furnishings and displays from fading.

Prefabrication efficiency – Stepped IGUs can be factory assembled with support structures, enabling rapid onsite installation and shortened construction timelines.

How to Choose Stepped Insulating Glass

When selecting stepped insulating glass for your project, several factors should be considered.

First, determine the required step height and configuration, that is, whether the step is needed on one side, two sides or all four sides, based on the framing system and aesthetic preferences.

Second, define the thermal performance requirements by specifying the Ug-value according to local building codes and energy efficiency targets, and choose appropriate Low-E coatings and gas fills such as argon or krypton.

Third, select the glass type and thickness. Outer panes typically require heat-strengthened or tempered safety glass of 6 to 12 mm thickness for facade applications, while laminated glass may be needed for enhanced safety and wind load resistance.

Fourth, assess acoustic requirements. For noise sensitive environments, specify laminated glass and wider air spaces.

Fifth, confirm the maximum panel size that the manufacturer can produce.

Sixth, verify that the product meets relevant local and international standards, such as CE, SGCC, IGCC, KS or Australian Standards.

Seventh, pay attention to edge treatment, as exposed glass edges in stepped units should be arrised or smooth ground to prevent injury.
