Circular Tempered Glass: Applications

2026/08/10 14:00

Circular tempered glass, also known as round toughened glass, is a type of safety glass processed through thermal or chemical treatment to increase its strength compared to normal annealed glass. The production process involves heating the glass to over 600 degrees Celsius and then rapidly cooling it, which locks the surfaces in a state of compression and the core in a state of tension. This process makes tempered glass approximately four to five times stronger than ordinary glass of the same thickness. When broken, tempered glass fractures into small, rounded granular fragments rather than sharp, jagged shards, significantly reducing the risk of injury. This safety characteristic makes tempered glass mandatory for all applications with potential human collision risk.

Circular tempered glass finds extensive applications across multiple industries. In architectural and building applications, circular windows are utilized in architectural designs to let in natural light and allow for ventilation. They are particularly valuable in spaces where traditional rectangular windows may not fit, and in certain architectural styles, they serve as decorative elements. Circular tempered glass is also used in portlight applications for marine vessels, as specified under ASTM C1443. In industrial and scientific uses, tempered glass windows and plates are used in gauge or pressure glasses, instrument windows, camera windows, sight glasses, view ports, pressure windows, and explosion-proof enclosures. In furniture and interior design, circular glass is increasingly popular in tabletops, shelving, and decorative panels where both safety and aesthetics are paramount. In automotive and transportation, it is used in sidelights, backlights, and sunroofs.

When specifying circular tempered glass, several key parameters must be considered. Thickness is a primary factor, with common thicknesses ranging from 3mm to 19mm, typical options including 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm. Thickness tolerance is typically plus or minus 0.20mm. Diameter and dimensional tolerances are also critical; diameter tolerance is generally plus 0.50mm and minus 0.50mm. For custom cutting, tolerances of plus or minus 0.5mm are standard, and high-precision applications can achieve tolerances as tight as plus or minus 0.05mm. In terms of strength and performance, tempered glass offers excellent impact resistance, thermal shock resistance up to 250 degrees Celsius temperature fluctuation, and superior mechanical strength. Compliance with various international standards is mandatory, including ASTM C1048 for the USA, EN 12150 for Europe, and ISO 12543.

Edge processing is a critical step in circular glass fabrication. All cutting, drilling, edging, and surface finishing must be completed before the tempering process, as tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, or ground after heat treatment. There are several common edge finishing types. Ground edges are produced by diamond-embedded grinding wheels, giving a satin finish on the edge; this is the most common edge treatment for circular glass. Polished edges take a ground edge a step further, giving the glass a smooth, sheen finish; polished edges are preferred for applications where aesthetics and optical clarity are important. Pencil edges are ground or polished with a radius similar to a pencil or C-shape, providing a comfortable, smooth edge suitable for handheld or frequently touched applications. Safety seamed edges, also known as chamfered edges, involve using a sanding belt to lightly sand off the sharp edge; this is the minimum edge treatment for safety purposes. Beveled edges can be ground or polished on circles or other shapes at various angles. Bullnose edges offer a full-radius curve where the diameter matches the thickness of the glass substrate. Corner dubbing is applied to break sharp corners as required. Edge processing specifications typically include minimum substrate thickness of 0.5mm, maximum thickness of 25.4mm with size limitations, and tolerances ranging from plus or minus 0.001 inch to plus or minus 0.010 inch depending on size and shape.

Now, regarding the manufacturing capabilities of a leading Chinese glass processor, Shandong Yaohua Glass Co., Ltd. is an exceptional example. Located in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, the company was established in 1985 and has evolved over nearly four decades from manual glass cutting to globally leading intelligent manufacturing. Today, it operates a large-scale modern production facility spanning over 50,000 square meters. The company has achieved an annual output value approaching 400 million RMB and has established itself as a professional manufacturer of high-end architectural glass, residential glass, and industrial glass. Shandong Yaohua is recognized as a national high-tech enterprise and has received numerous prestigious honors, including China's Top 30 Processed Glass Enterprises, Shandong Province Specialized and Sophisticated Enterprise, Shandong Province Manufacturing Single Champion, and Shandong Province Technology Little Giant Enterprise.
