Product Details

Black laminated glass is a type of safety glass made by bonding two or more glass panes with a black polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or SGP interlayer. The black interlayer gives the glass a deep, uniform, opaque black appearance while retaining all the safety and performance benefits of laminated glass.

Common Configurations

Black laminated glass can be customized in various constructions depending on strength, thickness, and transparency requirements (though the glass remains visually opaque black):

Annealed black laminated glass – Standard configuration for interior partitions and decorative panels.

Tempered black laminated glass – Combines the strength of tempered outer layers with the black interlayer; used for doors, railings, and exterior facades.

Heat-strengthened black laminated glass – Offers better thermal stability for large exterior panels.

Multi-layer black laminated glass – Three or more glass plies with black interlayers for high-impact or security applications.

Black reflective or low-E laminated glass – Adds energy-saving coating on one side while maintaining the black aesthetic.

Typical thicknesses range from thin (e.g., for cabinet doors) to very thick (for structural or balustrade use). The black interlayer can be either fully opaque or semi-transparent (if a tinted black film is used), but most often it provides complete opacity.

Key Applications

Black laminated glass is widely used in:

Architectural & Interior Design

Office partitions and meeting room walls – Creates a sophisticated, privacy-enhancing divider.

Balustrades and stair railings – Provides a bold, minimalist safety barrier.

Shower enclosures and bathroom walls – Opaque black adds luxury and hides water spots.

Kitchen backsplashes and cabinet fronts – Easy to clean and extremely durable.

Elevator interiors and lobby panels – High-end aesthetic with finger-print resistance.

Exterior & Facade

Spandrel glass – Hides structural elements behind a uniform black appearance.

Sunshades and louvers – Reduces glare while maintaining a dark architectural line.

Shopfronts and display windows – Creates dramatic contrast for retail branding.

Canopies and skylights – When combined with tempered glass, provides both shade and safety.

Furniture & Decoration

Tabletops and desks – Scratch-resistant and heat-resistant (if tempered).

Shelving and display cases – Offers a premium backdrop for merchandise.

Wall cladding and feature walls – Replaces painted drywall or stone.

Specialty

Home theater rooms – Black glass walls eliminate light reflection.

Museum exhibit backdrops – Non-glare, uniform darkness.

Soundproof recording studio windows – The black interlayer adds acoustic damping.

Advantages of Black Laminated Glass

Compared to other black glass solutions (like painted glass or acrylic), black laminated glass offers distinct benefits:

Permanent color – The black interlayer is sealed between glass layers, so it never fades, peels, or scratches off. Painted black glass can chip or wear over time.

Safety first – When broken, the glass fragments adhere to the black interlayer, reducing injury risk and preventing fallout. This is critical for overhead or public-area installations.

UV protection – Blocks over 99% of harmful UV rays, protecting interior furnishings and artwork behind the glass.

Sound reduction – The PVB interlayer dampens noise, making black laminated glass ideal for busy office or urban environments.

Structural integrity – Even after cracking, the panel stays in place, maintaining security and weather resistance.

Uniform opacity – No light leaks or uneven coating; the black is perfectly consistent from edge to edge.

Compatible with tempering – Can be heat-treated for increased strength without losing the black interlayer’s properties.

Easy maintenance – Smooth glass surface resists dust and fingerprints; clean with standard glass cleaner.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Is black laminated glass completely opaque?
Yes, with a standard black PVB interlayer, the glass is fully opaque – no light passes through. For applications where some translucency is desired, a thinner or tinted black interlayer can be used, but that is less common.

2. Can black laminated glass be used outdoors?
Absolutely. It resists moisture, UV, and temperature changes. However, for exterior use, we recommend tempered black laminated glass or heat-strengthened versions to withstand wind and thermal stress.

3. How does it differ from black painted glass?
Painted glass has a coating on the back surface that can scratch, peel, or discolor over time. Black laminated glass has the color embedded internally, making it far more durable and long-lasting.

4. Can I drill or cut black laminated glass on site?
No. All holes and edge work must be done at the factory before lamination. Field modifications will break the edge seal and compromise safety.

5. Is black laminated glass more expensive than clear laminated glass?
Slightly, due to the colored interlayer. However, the cost difference is minimal compared to the aesthetic and durability benefits, especially for architectural projects.

6. Does black laminated glass get hot in the sun?
Yes, dark colors absorb more heat. For exterior applications in hot climates, we can combine the black interlayer with a low-emissivity (low-E) coating or use heat-strengthened glass to manage thermal stress.

7. Can I get a black laminated glass with a different finish (matte, glossy, textured)?
The glass surface itself can be clear, low-iron, or patterned. The black interlayer is always uniform inside. For a matte exterior, acid-etched or frosted glass can be laminated with a black interlayer – that creates a black, non-reflective surface.

8. What thicknesses are available?
From thin (e.g., two layers of 3mm glass with a black interlayer) to very thick (e.g., two layers of 12mm glass). The total thickness depends on safety and structural requirements.

9. Is black laminated glass environmentally friendly?
Yes. It is durable, long-lasting, and recyclable. The interlayer does not release harmful substances. Our manufacturing process meets international environmental standards.

10. Why should I choose your company’s black laminated glass?
With over three decades of experience, top-tier certifications (ISO, CCC, CE, SGCC, AS/NZS, etc.), and a 50,000+ m² smart factory, we deliver consistent quality and custom solutions. Our black laminated glass is exported to more than 80 countries, trusted for its permanent color, safety performance, and architectural beauty.
