I. Product Overview

A glass tabletop is a furniture component that uses tempered glass or laminated glass as the main tabletop material. It is used with wooden, metal, or stone bases and is widely applied to dining tables, coffee tables, desks, conference tables, and other settings. Its core advantages include a transparent visual effect, excellent heat and wear resistance, and an easy-to-clean surface. II. Common Parameters

1. Thickness Specifications

The thickness of a glass tabletop is a key parameter determining load-bearing capacity and safety. For regular household tabletops, a thickness of 8 mm or more is recommended. For large surfaces such as large dining tables and conference tables, 10–12 mm is recommended. For extra-large tabletops, 15 mm or even 19 mm ultra-thick glass may be used. Common thicknesses include 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 16 mm, and 19 mm.

2. Glass Types

Tempered Glass: Treated by high-temperature quenching, its strength is 4–5 times that of ordinary glass, and its bending strength is 3–5 times that of ordinary glass. When broken, it shatters into blunt, honeycomb-like granules without sharp edges, providing high safety. It is currently the mainstream choice for glass tabletops. In terms of heat resistance, it can withstand temperature changes above 200°C.

Heat-Soaked Glass: On the basis of tempered glass, it undergoes a heat soak treatment. Through heating and insulation, nickel sulfide inside the glass undergoes a phase change, pre-triggering potential spontaneous breakage points and reducing the spontaneous breakage rate to near zero. It is suitable for scenarios with extremely high safety requirements.

Laminated Glass: PVB or SGP interlayers are placed between two or more pieces of glass, which are then formed under high temperature and high pressure. Even if the glass breaks, the fragments remain firmly attached to the interlayer and will not fly or fall, further improving safety. Common combinations include 5+0.76PVB+5 and 6+1.14PVB+6, with thicknesses ranging from 9 mm to 100 mm.

Ultra-Clear Glass: Also known as low-iron glass, it has an iron content that is extremely low, and its light transmittance can reach over 91.5% (ordinary glass is about 86%). It offers a crystal-clear visual effect and is suitable for high-end tabletops pursuing a highly transparent texture.

3. Physical Properties

• Mohs hardness: about 7 (tempered glass)

• Density: about 2.5 g/cm³

• Heat resistance: tempered glass can withstand temperature changes above 200°C

4. Size and Shape

Glass tabletops support rectangular, round, oval, and irregular custom shapes. Shandong Yaohua flat tempered glass can reach a maximum size of 3300 × 13000 mm, curved tempered glass can reach a maximum size of 2500 × 5000 mm, and heat-soaked glass can reach a maximum size of 2500 × 6000 mm. Regular household tabletop sizes cover a wide range and can be precisely customized according to the actual base dimensions.

5. Edge Treatment

Edges and corners should be ground or rounded. Common edge types include straight edge, round edge, chamfered edge, and ogee edge. For customization, it is recommended to round the four corners (such as R10) to reduce the risk of impact.

III. How to Choose a Glass Tabletop

1. Choose by Thickness

• Coffee tables, small side tables: 8 mm tempered glass is sufficient for daily use

• Dining tables, desks: 10–12 mm is recommended

• Large conference tables, large surfaces: 12–15 mm or thicker

• Extra-large tabletops: 15–19 mm ultra-thick glass

Core principle: the larger the tabletop, the greater the thickness required to ensure sufficient bending strength and load-bearing capacity.

2. Choose by Glass Type

• Best value for money: ordinary tempered glass, meeting basic safety requirements

• Ultimate safety: heat-soaked tempered glass (extremely low spontaneous breakage rate) or laminated glass (fragments do not fly)

• High transparency and texture: ultra-clear tempered glass or ultra-clear laminated glass

• Heat/sound insulation needs: insulating laminated glass combinations

3. Notes on Custom Sizes

When customizing a glass tabletop, the glass should not fit flush against the base. It should be 1–2 mm smaller than the tabletop or frame to allow for thermal expansion and contraction, avoiding cracking caused by weather changes. Measurements should be accurate to the millimeter; a 2 mm error may prevent installation.

4. Safety Certification

When purchasing, confirm that the product has passed China Compulsory Certification (CCC) for safety glass and complies with GB 15763.2, Safety Glazing Materials in Building — Part 2: Tempered Glass. For export or high-end applications, check whether it has passed Australian, EU, or North American standard certifications.
